‘words unlock the doors to a world of understanding’
As part of the form tutor programme, each week two different words are explored during form time. These words have been carefully selected from each subject area. They are not key topic words but rather, words that appear at a high frequency in textbooks or exam papers. For example, analyse, establish and interpret.
Words differ between each Key Stage, increasing in difficulty through Years 7-11. A template is used (Frayer Model, see below) to look at each word’s, definition, use, synonyms (words that mean the same) and antonyms (words that mean the opposite). Student’s access these via a Google classroom where they add their own ideas to the template to build a dictionary of academic terms. At the beginning and/or end of each half term students are quizzed on previous words covered for definitions and usage.
